Easter 1201. Following a treaty between King John and King Philip of France, England is at last at peace. Alas the same cannot be said for Saint Edmund’s Abbey. The pope’s new legate has arrived determined to stir up controversy. For Abbot Samson this brings the possibility of a new ally against an old enemy. But his intrigues lead to disaster with Brother Walter being placed in mortal danger and a full-scale battle in the nearby village of Lakenheath. In the middle of all this the legate’s clerk is murdered and a London merchant is wrongly accused. In desperation the man is granted sanctuary at the abbey’s shrine, but it is only a brief respite. The whole weight of the judiciary and the church are against him. Amid rape, religious bigotry and trial by combat Walter has to find the real murderer before a terrible injustice is done and the wrong man is hanged.

though this book is about a medieval monk, it could have been placed in any century. There was little feeling of place or time. Although the events could only have happened when the Church was the main power in everything, the murder was mundane, with little cohesion and very little history to unmask the eventual culprit, even though he confesses several times. Having read all of Ellis Peters', Susanna Gregory's Margaret Frazer's & many of Paul Doherty's medieval mysteries, I appreciate a well written one. This wasn't particularly entrancing, nor did it continue to hold my interest.

Excellently researched and mostly very well-written. My only criticism is that it should have been better proof-read. The missing words and, yes, commas, distracted a bit from the pace of the story.
This series which revolves around Brother Walter XlWorth, physician and Benedictine monk, during the period of 1190-1210 is just wonderful.

When I first began reading I didn't realize that virtually everyone and everything was true! The characters, many of them returning throughout the series become like old friends or intensely disliked/distrusted advisories.

The mysteries are intriguing and difficult to unravel. Despite this, the stories move quickly and sometimes with laugh out loud moments (there are just not enough moments with Walter, Lady Isabel, Walter's mother and her long suffering servant, Oswald- unfortunately, there aren't any in this book at all).

Whether you are a history buff or not, if you're looking for an intelligent, quick witted, down right difficult to figure out mystery with three-dimensional characters, this series is not to be missed.
A legate of the Pope arrives in Saint Edmond's Abbey in 1201 AD. He intends to investigate to see if all is being conducted as it should be in the shire. He and his clerk go to the local market to harangue the people there for engaging in commerce on a Sunday. A melee breaks out and the clerk is found murdered with an iron bar through his chest. A seller of gloves, who had argued with the legate, is charged with the murder. Brother Walter believes the man is innocent and intends to find the real murderer.

This is a very well written historical novel with good dialogue and descriptions. It is written in a lighter vein with many humorous one liners throughout. This makes it a joy to read. One can get a good idea of what life was like in England in the 13th century and how justice (if it can be called that) was carried out. One might get the idea that justice was not as much sought after as was simply finding someone to blame and convict of the crime . Then people could move on with their lives. I was not too happy with the ending but that did not take away from my over all enjoyment of the book. If you like accurate historical novels with some humor added then this book is worth a look. I intend to read other books in this series.
The entire Brother Walter series is excellent. Stories are well crafted, and Walter is a hoot.
delightful read, Father Brown is a hoot.
An eazy read that keeps you guessing. Looking forward to reading the next book. Brother Walter seems like an old friend.
Walter is inept & unlucky enough to have everyone misunderstand what he's really trying to do. God bless him, he always stumbles to the solution.
